Letter from the Chief
Pharmacy Officer

Welcome to this special oncology issue of Pharmacy InFocus.

One of the greatest challenges in medicine is cancer. Cancer is actually a combination of many different disease states, which makes it very difficult and expensive to study, diagnose and treat.

This special issue of Pharmacy InFocus begins with a specific example of our thought leadership in the area of oncology care and, more specifically, managing oncology pharmaceuticals. Read how UnitedHealthcare’s own Dr. Lee Newcomer is piloting an innovative new way to pay for better results in oncology care. You can also watch and listen to a short video where Dr. Newcomer describes his groundbreaking work.

Next we trace how our long-term support of innovative cancer care has evolved and deepened over time. With previous initiatives that lead-up to some of the exciting developments that are happening right now.

Also, oncology medications comprise a significant and growing proportion of the total amount spent on specialty medications. So we know you will want to learn more about a recent study we published that shows how specialty pharmacies can help control overall medical costs while also contributing to increased adherence and improved outcomes.

Finally, don’t miss our New Drug Snapshot. We present short summaries of a few of the newest oncology drugs that we think will have the biggest impact on client benefit plan costs.

Thank you for reading Pharmacy InFocus. As always, we want to know what you think. Just click on the “Send us your feedback” link, below.
